Below is a brief write-up as requested by USENIX. It is written largely from a personal perspective, i.e. how this applies to my work/employer, rather than the general benefits that I believe it would have for the practice of system administration as a profession. My LISA registration form was sent to USENIX a couple of weeks ago. Thank you! Ruth. -------- The NRAO is currently planning for implementation of a new mandate for increased co-ordination in all aspects of computing among its four major sites, including System and Network Administration. As a result, there will be a significant increase in complexity and in the number of people who must interact directly on many tasks, large and small. Although each of the sites has some processes in place for specific purposes, and a few basic standards have been agreed upon NRAO-wide for many years, not all of these will be adequate in the future. We need to assess our current practices and find ways to cope with the coming changes, which we hope will improve efficiency and services across the organization. My personal role in this is as a senior SA guiding and tracking the projects and processes related to this shift. A model similar to the CMM has enormous potential for making this successful. I'm not sure that it would be developed on the timescale we might need it, but knowing what directions this effort is moving in - and possibly having some influence on that - would be useful in itself. ---- Ruth Milner National Radio Astronomy Observatory Computing Security Manager, Socorro, NM Assistant to the Director for rmilner@nrao.edu Data Management - 505-835-7282 Computing Acquisitions/Budgets/Contracts FAX 505-835-7027
