I think I may be able to add useful input to the discussions. (if you need my resume: http://www.hsdi.com/~eric/resume) In my most recent position, I was hired to convert a decaying HP/UX, FreeBSD, Linux, and NT software development environment into a world-class infrastructure. Over a period of six months, I hired six staff members and ousted a politically entrenched system administration firm that had mismanaged the site for several years. I implemented standard procedures, designed and supervised the source-code modification of standard tools such as NIS/Samba, and integrated these procedures and modifications into my management scheme. I personally designed, implemented, and deployed database-driven automation tools to manage purchasing, accounts, e-mail aliases, IP addresses, automatic paging of admins, and syslog messages from over 60 Hewlett-Packard and Sun servers. I also designed, implemented, and deployed a custom web-based helpdesk system that provides active feedback to the customer and allows me to track resources. Even with all our automation in place, it is difficult to produce convincing metrics that can be used to compare our facility to others and for reporting to senior management. Simple metrics such as reduced downtime, reduced failures, customer satisfaction (largely subjective), and cost reduction are *not* enough. We need a real way to rank and compare IT organizations, especially when the time comes to justify your existence and expansion. Eric ============================== Eric H.
